Don't laugh. I think we all agree that the Greenville music scene isn't one of the most happening in the world. But, if it is ever going to change we have to do something. Earlier this year someone was interested in starting an indie venue here. This didn't happen because of apparent lack of interest on the community's part. One suggestion was getting people together to show their support of such a venture. Perhaps if we get organized enough to have a website, we can educate people and inform them about whats going on. Maybe artists will be inspired or encouraged to pursue music. Anyways, I think its a good idea.

On this site I want to have album reviews, concert reviews, concert listings, band listings, venue listings, resources, etc. It would be limited to the Greenville area. Certain criteria required to be listed in the bands section. Oh yes, and this site would be all about the rock. Independent/rock/pop is the main focus. Other acceptable genres would probably include: electropop/hardcore/singer-songwriter/alt-country. Most of those are subcategories of rock/pop. No: rap,r&b, jazz, soul, funk, reggae, blues, bluegrass, folk, or country. When I say "No" I mean I would not go out of my way to cover these genres, and would not initially pick groups in these genres to feature. However, if Greenville had a bluegrass band that just took off and was getting MTV airplay, I might mention them in the news. The band listings would not be comprehensive for Greenville. For the closest thing to a comprehensive list you would have to go to the Link and look at the xtreme bands listed there.

What do you think? Does anyone have anything clever for the url of the page? So far all I've got is greenvillescene.com

See: www.evansvillescene.com - this one is just a forum now. It used to be like what I described above.
www.athensmusic.com

P.S. My brother has agreed to help set the site up. And to make it look good. how exciting!

married

Ben and I are now married. The wedding went well, the honeymoon was great. You can view pictures of the wedding here. The password is 071506. Michelle and Ben is what you type on the first page.

We're still moving, arranging, and putting things away. Moving is so much work. I see why my parents have lived in the same house for 30 years. I don't have much more than that to say right now. Just letting people know what has transpired recently. Don't be mad if you haven't been invited over yet... we can barely walk in the place right now.

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Jacksonville City Nights

This album is very good. I got it in October and have just started listening to it now. Its one of my favorites by him and that's saying alot. The End is just gorgeous along with Dear John. A Kiss Before I Go, Hard Way To Fall, and Trains are standouts. Man, most of them are really good. I'm listening to Silver Bullets. Its very country, moreso than Gold. I haven't heard Cold Roses, but I think I would like it. Thats my 2 cents.

Danielson show review and a diversion

Ben and I went to see Danielson on July 4th in Athens, GA.

We got there too early, so we had to sit through the entire sets of the opening bands. First up was Mouser. Now, it seems like every local Athens band these days has about 18 members including a horn section. This sight makes me uneasy at first. Are they going to play ska? No, this is Athens, they know better. Mouser's first song was a little under-practiced but they took off from there. Overall, I thought they were pretty good. The singer did his best Bobcat Goldthwait impersonation in between songs. Kind of weird. The second opener was called Telenovela. Opposite of Mouser, they started out sounding pretty interesting. Then grew worse and worse in their presentation. Just seemed like an immature band. I fault both bands for playing an hour long set. You just don't do that if you're an opening band.

Danielson: They came out in their uniforms and proceeded to do the first 4 songs in order from their new album Ships. I personally, really liked that. Those are my favorite songs from the record. They played a couple more from the record. Then got off the stage. They came back for two encores. The first they did Time That Bald Sexton. and then did That Dragon Ain't The Love? I guess its called... Anyways. That was funny. Some dude in the crowd yelled out "yes it is" (referring to the title: that dragon ain't the love). Daniel immediately and seriously answered back: No, .. it "ain't". Thats what we're singing about. Are you trying to write your own song? Ah, that was great. So, they played very well. Very entertaining, nice, smiling, great. I like them even more now. I'm so glad there are people like them in the world. Artists, boldly christian, creative, .... nice.

DIVERSION

So, Athens is a dirty little town. I definitely don't like it as much as I used to. I still like the 40 Watt as a club, though I don't like having to wait until midnight for the band I drove an hour and a half to see to START playing. But alot of clubs do that. Anyway, we talked to the guy from the 40 Watt who was going to start a club here in Greenville. Well, SOMEONE told him that he couldn't get a crowd out and so he's not going to do it anymore. At least not for another year. So that was sad.

Why can't we have a venue here? Does anyone else want one? Whats the deal? I know that its mainly a lack of money. There are at least 10 people in this town that would be willing to start up a club if money was no object. It was suggested that we start trying to have shows anywhere. Another fellow in town has been trying to do this at the Bait Shack. But the problem is that we need GOOD bands to play. deeeeeeep sigh....... ok......

We have no local scene. We might have some bands or acts, but they are not going to carry a scene. We need a venue that will book good indie bands so that our local bands can see what they need to be aiming for. They need inspiration. Where can we do this? The Handlebar? I wish we could. They've booked a handful of good shows. I wish they would give us a regular night. I don't know where else to do anything. Justin and Angel were trying to use Carpenter's Cellar. That was a good effort. Maybe we should keep that up. I................ don't know..................................................................
